We have been delighted to have held our summer league again after 2 disrupted years. We started in April with 24 teams split into 4 divisions – the first competitive league for 2 years. It has been really exciting and enjoyable to get back on court.
Whilst we have fewer teams this season, due to some teams not returning after Covid, we welcomed some new teams, and along with those returning- they have been keenly fighting to win their respective divisions. With matches played throughout a Tuesday evening at Westfield Academy in Yeovil, it is brilliant to see so many women playing the sport we love.
The 4 divisions include teams of a variety of levels, ranging from girls playing in the Somerset League in the winter to girls playing social netball – and all things in between! Many of the girls who have not played winter netball end up being encouraged to join a club as a result of playing through the summer with us.
We use qualified umpires who also play on a Tuesday night. It is an ideal environment to allow new ‘up and coming’ umpires to practice their skills, whilst being mentored by experienced umpires.
We are finishing the season with a Versatility tournament – where players get to play different positions in rotation. We use it as a fundraiser for charity – in memory of players that we have lost.
